There have been over 4.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK and nearly 128,000 people have died. 9 new Covid-related death were announced in the UK yesterday, Wednesday. Nearly 73 million vaccine doses have been received across the UK and over 42 million people have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine – about 80% of all adults.
Over 30 million people have had both their first and second jab, 55.5% of all adults.
Everyone aged 18 and over are being invited to have a first jab and the focus has shifted to offer a second vaccine within 8 weeks. The average number of daily infections in the UK is rising in some areas, fuelled by the Delta variant, with over 11,000 new cases announced by the government yesterday, Thursday.
The R value and growth rate in England
The R range for England is 1.2 to 1.4 and the growth rate range for England is +3% to +6% per day as of 11 June 2021. Following the announcement of plans to ease of lockdown, the roadmap can be found in full here.

Despite the delay on the lifting of all lockdown restrictions for another four weeks, the UK economy is still set for a breakthrough year, according to the latest CBI economic forecast. UK GDP is set to bounce back to its pre-Covid levels towards the end of 2021, a year earlier than had previously been forecast.
UK SMEs set to benefit from multi-billion-pound funding with new national bank
A new national bank is set to boost UK SMEs with multi-billion-pound funding. Launched today at its headquarters in Leeds, the UK Infrastructure Bank will be tasked with accelerating investment into infrastructure projects, cutting emissions and levelling up every part of the UK. First announced by the Chancellor alongside the Spending Review, the Bank will help to finance important projects in every region and nation of the UK in sectors including clean energy, transport, digital, water and waste. The UK Infrastructure Bank will have an initial £12bn of capital to deploy and will be able to issue £10bn of government guarantees, helping to unlock more than £40bn of overall investment. Working in partnership with local government and the private sector, the bank will harness investment tailored to the needs of specific infrastructure projects, offering a range of financing tools including debt, equity, and guarantees.
Tesco beats expectations for first quarter as clothing comes back on trend
A UK supermarket chain has announced that its sales have beaten market expectations in the first quarter of the year. Tesco reported today that like-for-like online sales in the UK rose by 22.2 per cent in the 13 weeks to the end of May, with two-year LFL sales growth of 81.6 per cent. The retailer also said that its overall sales saw growth of 1 per cent, rising to £13,362m and overtaking the high demand in the first quarter of last year. It saw a 52.1 per cent rise in clothing sales, while general merchandise sales increased by 10.3 per cent.

Lights camera action as Greater Manchester expands reputation as media stage
Greater Manchester has grown a reputation as a world-class centre for media production with the city-region now boasting almost 1 million sq ft of formal production space. Research from Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (GM LEP) has shown over 15 full-size football pitches of space for media production now exist in the city, supporting 88,000 digital and creative jobs. Dubbed the Hollywood of the North, the media industry is part of a £5 billion digital, creative and technology sector. Production hubs in the city-region also include Space Studios in West Gorton, the Sharp Project in Newton Heath and in Stockport, the Vectar Project has committed to carbon neutral film production with studios totalling almost 4,000 sq ft. Locations across Greater Manchester have also provided backdrops for filming, with high profile productions such as Netflix’s The Stranger and the BBC’s Peaky Blinders filming in Stockport town centre, as well as in Manchester city centre.

GM latest infection rates as cases continue to climb
The borough recorded a rate of 333.4 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending June 13, according to the latest Public Health England data. Meanwhile in Stockport, the infection rate flattened with 212.7 cases per 100,000 people. Stockport saw a total of 624 cases in the week ending June 13, which is the same as the previous week.

RETAIL:
The Office for National Statistics said sales fell most significantly at food stores as consumers took advantage of Covid restrictions being lifted in the hospitality sector to eat out.
In contrast, sales at non-food shops rose on demand for outdoor furniture.
The proportion of online sales dipped as people returned to physical shops.
It is the third month in a row that the proportion of online sales has fallen, but the ONS said they “remain nearly 60% higher than the level seen in February 2020” before the pandemic.

easyJet increase domestic flights for UK holidays to Scotland and Northern Ireland
easyJet has put two new domestic flights and more seats on sale today from Manchester to Scotland to serve demand for domestic travel. Stockport Council details of Government’s Restart Grant
The Restart Grant scheme supports businesses in the non-essential retail, hospitality, leisure, personal care and accommodation sectors with a one-off grant, to reopen safely as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
Applications close on 30 June 2021
The Restart Grant will be split into two strands:
– Strand one will be for non-essential retail businesses that may be entitled to a one-off cash grant of up to £6,000.
– Strand two will be for hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym businesses that may be entitled to a one-off cash grant of up to £18,000.
Strand 1 Businesses that have a rateable value:
- of £15,000 or less on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £2,667
- between £15,001 and £50,999 on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £4,000
- of £51,000 or more on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £6,000
Strand 2 Businesses that have a rateable value:
- of £15,000 or less on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £8,000

Coronavirus Roadmap out of lockdown – what and when?
From 29 March:
- People will be allowed to meet outside, either with one other household or within the “rule of six”, including in private gardens
- The stay at home rule will end, but the government will urge people to stay local as much as possible
- Outdoor sport facilities will reopen, including golf courses and tennis and basketball courts, and formally organised outdoor sports can restart
- Weddings attended by up to six people can take place in any circumstances
Stage two (no earlier than 12 April):
- All shops allowed to open, along with close-contact services, including hairdressers and beauty salons (including in people’s homes)
- Restaurants and pubs allowed to serve food and alcohol to customers sitting outdoors Gyms and spas can reopen, as can zoos, theme parks, libraries and community centres
- Members of the same household can take a holiday in the UK in self-contained accommodation
- Weddings attended by up to 15 people can take place
Stage three (no earlier than 17 May):
- People can meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors
- Six people or two households can meet indoors
- Pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues can seat customers indoors
- Up to 30 people can attend weddings or other life events, like christenings
- Remaining outdoor entertainment, such as outdoor theatres and cinemas can open
- Indoor entertainment such as museums, theatres, cinemas and children’s play areas can open
- Performances and large events can restart, but with limits on audience numbers
- Hotels, hostels and B&Bs can reopen
- International leisure travel may resume
- Adult indoor group sports and exercise classes can restart
Stage four (no earlier than 21 June):
- All legal limits on social contact will be removed
- No legal limits on the number of people who can attend weddings, funerals and other life events
- Nightclubs will be allowed to reopen

Repayment period for Bounce Back Loans extended to ten years
Businesses that took out government Bounce Back loans to help them through the Coronavirus crisis now have more time to repay. Companies will be contacted with options to extend the length of the loan from six to 10 years as part of a new ‘pay-as-you-grow’ initiative. The new proposals give businesses three new options:
- Extending the length of the loan from six years to 10;
- Making interest-only payments for six months, then repaying the principal on a phased basis with other interest-only periods;
- Delaying repayments entirely for up to six months.
