Manchester United and FC Barcelona are joining together for a Legends Match this weekend to commemorate the recent terror attacks in both cities.
On Saturday 2nd September, legends of each team will unite for the charity fixture, and will wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims of the attacks in Manchester in May, and in Barcelona and Cambrils earlier this month.
The players will also have the names of their respective cities on the backs of their shirts, as the FC Barcelona first-team did during the first match of their season against Betis on 20th August.
Ahead of kick-off, a minute’s silence will be held in the stadium as the teams line up, with a message of support being displayed on the digital boards surrounding the pitch.
Bryan Robson, manager of the Manchester United Legends team, said,
“Manchester is no stranger to the devastating effects of terrorism and we can empathise with how difficult it must be for the Catalan people to recover from the recent attacks. However, as two of the most iconic teams in world sport, we can use the power of football to bring people together. We must unite to show our strength, rally around our communities and stand up together against all forms of terrorism.”
The Barça Legends team is being managed on the day by former defender Albert Ferrer. He said:
“The two cities have been linked by terrorism this year, so I think it’s important to show everyone that Manchester and Barcelona stand together. It’s important that we all pay our respects to those who lost their lives. We all have to be strong, and this game is a way of showing that we are.”
The Manchester United squad for Saturday’s Legends Match will include Edwin van der Sar, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ji-sung Park and Wes Brown, whilst the Barça side includes Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Gaizka Mendieta and Éric Abidal.
British boyband The Vamps will be performing pre-match and there will also be a number of family activities and carnival-style entertainment outside the stadium.
The match will be shown live on MUTV in the UK and tickets are on sale now at www.manutd.com/legendsareback. Prices start from £20 for adults and £5 for under-16s, with hospitality packages available from £125. All proceeds will go to Manchester United Foundation’s work across Greater Manchester.
