Stockport Council is consulting over improving journeys on the A6 corridor from the Manchester Boundary to Stockport Town Centre.
Working in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), the council is exploring options to make roads safer, improve bus journeys, and make it easier to walk and cycling along this key artery in the borough.
A scheme has been developed jointly with TfGM, and a public consultation is being held from Monday 26th February to Sunday 24th March.
Proposed works set out focus on improvements to four key areas:
- Improved bus journeys – between the junctions with Crossley Road and Heaton Road, new bus lanes have been proposed, along with improvements to intersections, enhanced crossings and better bus stops.
- Western cycle route – an improved walking and cycle route from Buckingham Road, Heaton Moor to Mersey Square
- Eastern cycle route – a quiet road and off-carriageway route from Nelstrop Road North (connecting with the Fallowfield Loop) to the Town Centre near Redrock.
- 20 mph residential streets – reducing speed limits to 20 mph on many residential streets to make them safer for active travel.
The consultation on the proposed improvements to the A6 corridor will run for four weeks, and closes on 24th March 2024. Residents can have their say online on Stockport Council’s consultation website.
The project team will also be available to discuss plans at three events taking place in the area during March:
- Sunday, March 3rd from 10am until 2pm at Heaton Moor Market, Shaw Road, Heaton Moor
- Wednesday, March 6th from 2pm until 8pm at Heaton Sports Club, Green Lane, Heaton Moor, SK4 2NF
- Tuesday, March 12th from 2pm until 8pm at Heaton Chapel Community Centre, Broadstone Hall Rd S, Heaton Chapel, SK4 5JD
