Governors for Schools (Stockport) is a charity which exists to improve educational standards through recruiting and supporting an effective network of school governors. Schools across Stockport and Cheshire need school governors who can bring business skills to the Board, to help them develop the school’s strategic direction and support children and young people to reach their potential.
Becoming a school governor allows volunteers to use their expertise to benefit the local community, whilst gaining board-level experience, developing wider skills and broadening networks.
Governors for Schools works with individuals, as well as businesses and organisations to support their staff to take on the role. This is a fantastic personal development opportunity where new skills are gained which can be taken back to the workplace.
Schools register their vacancies with Governors for Schools stating the skills they are looking for. The Area Manager then looks for volunteers who will be a good match and puts them in touch. This service is free to schools (Local Authority maintained and academies), volunteers and the businesses and organisations we work with.
Volunteers are able to develop their skills through a free suite of e-learning modules and webinars available on the website, as well additional training provided through their governing board.
Emma Harris is the North West Area Manager, based in Stockport. She is available to discuss the role and how Governors for Schools can work with organisations to offer their staff this personal development opportunity.
